President Vladimir Putin has expressed strong support for Iran, praising the Iranian people for what he described as their struggle to maintain independence and sovereignty in the face of pressure from the United States and Israel.

Speaking during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St Petersburg, Putin said Russia would do everything possible to help Tehran and work toward restoring peace in the region. He added that Moscow hoped Iran could overcome what he called a “difficult period” and that stability would eventually prevail.

Russia has recently offered to mediate between the United States and Iran in an effort to reduce escalating tensions following military strikes in the region. Moscow has strongly condemned those strikes and has proposed hosting Iran’s enriched uranium as a confidence-building measure, although the idea has been rejected by Washington.

Putin also stated that Russia received a message from Iran’s leadership and reaffirmed Moscow’s intention to continue strengthening its long-term strategic partnership with Tehran. A 20-year cooperation agreement between the two countries was signed last year, reflecting deepening ties.

Russia is currently involved in nuclear cooperation projects with Iran, including the construction of additional nuclear power units at the Bushehr plant. In return, Iran has supplied drones to Russia, which have been used in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Araghchi thanked Russia for its continued support, saying Iran values its alliances with countries that stand by it during difficult times. He also briefed Putin on the current regional situation.

Meanwhile, Russian officials reiterated their position that diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran should continue, stressing that a return to military confrontation would serve no country’s interests.
